    Kadaknath chicken, also known as Kali Masi, is a unique breed of chicken native to India, particularly the Madhya Pradesh region. Its distinct black feathers, skin, and meat set it apart from other chicken varieties.

    Kadaknath chicken contains a high amount of essential amino acids, which serve as protein building blocks.

    In a study comparing the amino acid profiles of kadaknath and broiler chicken breast meat, researchers found that kadaknath came out on top for 11 out of the 19 amino acids tested. Meanwhile, broilers showed significantly higher levels in just 3 amino acids.

    Kadaknath chicken contains amino acids like alanine, asparagine, glutamic acid, glycine, serine and threonine. These amino acids are known to provide sweet and umami (savoury) taste to the meat of kadaknath chicken.

    2. Low in Fat and Cholesterol

    We have already discussed that kadaknath is a slow-growing bird. And it was also reported that more fat is deposited in the muscles of fast-growing birds like broilers than that of slow-growing birds like kadaknath chicken, making it a lean source of protein.

    In a study on 17 overweight men who followed an American Heart Association-style diet for 26 days. This diet included lean proteins like skinless chicken, ground turkey, lean beef, or fish. After each diet period, which was separated by a six-week break, all diets led to reductions in total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. The study suggests that lean poultry, beef, or fish can all effectively improve heart health when part of this diet.

    However, there is the need of further research and this study must have been done on lean cuts of commercial chicken.

    3. A Good Source of Antioxidants

    Kadaknath chicken is an excellent source of antioxidants named histidine-containing dipeptides (HCDs) such as carnosine and anserine.

    Additionally, another functional molecule creatine was found simultaneously when HCDs were determined. Creatine plays a vital role in the energy metabolism of skeletal muscles.

    Antioxidants protect cells from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals and help prevent chronic diseases promoting overall health.

    Dietary intake of HCDs protects against infections by bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses (including corona virus) by enhancing the metabolism and functions of monocytes, macrophages, and other cells of the immune system.

    It was also found that kadaknath chicken can inhibit the formation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs).

    High levels of AGEs can initiate certain actions in the body that leads to various disorders such as alzheimer’s disease, atherosclerosis, diabetes, kidney disease, and chronic heart failure.

    A comparative study between Kadaknath and Cobb broiler to find the ability of their meat extract to inhibit the formation of (AGEs) found that:

    • Kadaknath breast meat presented a better anti-glycation potential compared to the Cobb broiler.
    • Similarly, thigh meat extract of Kadaknath inhibited generation of fluorescent AGEs by about 10% higher compared to cobb broiler.

    The anti-glycation activity of Kadaknath meat was found to be similar to that of pure carnosine.

    4. May be a Good Source of Iron

    Iron deficiency is a common problem, particularly among women and children. Fortunately, Kadaknath chicken comes to the rescue with its high iron content.

    Iron is required for the formation of hemoglobin, the protein that transports oxygen in the bloodstream. Iron is also essential to produce some hormones.

    A small study on efficacy of carnosine in patients with Parkinson’s Disease found that one month of carnosine supplementation (1.5g daily) increased efficiency of standard Parkinson’s Disease treatment, reduce symptoms, and enhanced anti-oxidative activity.

    While the results are promising, some studies failed to show the positive results of carnosine and results of some studies lack consistency and in some other studies carnosine was used in combination with other bioactive compounds.

    Longer trials using pure carnosine in effective doses are needed to determine its safety and long-term effectiveness, following successful results from shorter studies.

    7. May Help Prevent Eye-Related Diseases

    Kadaknath chicken is rich in carnosine, an antioxidant with anti-glycation properties which may help delay aging-related visual impairment and prevent or treat senile cataracts.

    In a study of 49 elderly patients with advanced cataracts, using 1% aqueous N-acetylcarnosine (NAC, a derivative of carnosine) eye drops twice daily for 6 and 24 months improved cataract symptoms. Other studies by the same author also noted NAC’s benefits for eye health and its safety.

    Despite promising results, an external review of two randomized trials found no solid proof that NAC prevents or slows cataract development. This was due to insufficient trial details. More well-designed studies with more participants are needed to confirm NAC’s effect on eye health.
