Does Inflammation Cause Weight Gain? What Science Says

You step on the scale and notice your weight has gone up. Your diet hasn’t changed much, you’re staying active, and yet the number keeps creeping higher.

It can be tempting to blame inflammation. There is a connection, but it isn’t as simple as “inflammation causes weight gain.”

Inflammation and excess body fat can influence each other, while factors such as sleep, stress, diet, activity, hormones, medications, and medical conditions can also affect your weight.

So, can inflammation actually make you gain weight? And how can you tell the difference between temporary water weight and an increase in body fat?

What Is Inflammation?

Inflammation is a normal part of your immune system’s response to injury, infection, or other threats.

If you cut your finger, for example, the area may become red, swollen, warm, and painful. This short-term response, called acute inflammation, helps protect the injured tissue and supports healing.

The concern is chronic inflammation, when inflammatory activity continues for a prolonged period.

Chronic, low-grade inflammation can occur alongside conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic health problems.

Can Inflammation Cause Weight Gain?

Inflammation may play a role in processes involved in weight regulation, including insulin sensitivity, appetite, and metabolism. Chronic inflammatory signaling can interfere with insulin action, while inflammatory signals may also interact with pathways involved in appetite and energy balance.

Some long-term studies have found an association between higher levels of inflammatory markers and subsequent weight gain.

A 2003 study followed 2,821 healthy, nondiabetic men for an average of 6.1 years and found that higher levels of inflammation-sensitive plasma proteins were associated with a greater likelihood of substantial weight gain.

Similarly, a 2010 study followed 2,792 adults for about 10 years and found that higher levels of fibrinogen, C-reactive protein (CRP), and white blood cell counts were associated with greater weight gain.

However, the evidence isn’t consistent. Other prospective studies have found that inflammatory markers do not independently predict future weight gain after accounting for existing body weight and other factors.

Taken together, inflammation may play a role in weight regulation in some circumstances, but it isn’t established as an independent cause of weight gain. Excess body fat can also promote chronic inflammation, meaning the relationship may work in both directions.

Weight gain is also influenced by many other factors, including diet, physical activity, sleep, stress, medications, hormones, genetics, and underlying health conditions.

Can Inflammation Cause Temporary Weight Gain?

Yes—but a sudden increase on the scale during inflammation doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve gained body fat.

Inflammation can cause fluid to move out of blood vessels and accumulate in tissues, leading to swelling and temporary increases in body weight.

An infection or inflammatory illness can also change your appetite, digestion, activity level, and fluid balance, all of which can affect your weight over a short period.

These changes can happen much faster than actual fat gain. So if the scale jumps over a day or two, several pounds of new body fat would be unlikely. Changes in body water, glycogen, and the amount of food and fluid still in your digestive tract can all contribute to short-term fluctuations.

Other common causes of temporary weight changes include:

  • High sodium intake
  • Menstrual cycle changes
  • Increased carbohydrate intake
  • Changes in physical activity
  • Certain medications
  • Dehydration followed by rehydration
  • Digestive contents

Looking at your weight trend over several weeks gives you a much better picture than focusing on a single weigh-in.

What Causes Chronic Inflammation?

Chronic inflammation can have many causes and contributing factors. These may include:

  • Excess body fat
  • Smoking
  • Physical inactivity
  • Poor-quality diet
  • Chronic stress
  • Poor sleep
  • Certain infections
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Metabolic disorders
  • Long-term exposure to certain environmental factors

Importantly, weight gain, fatigue, bloating, or other nonspecific symptoms don’t automatically mean you have chronic inflammation.

How to Reduce Inflammation and Support a Healthy Weight

You don’t need an extreme “anti-inflammatory” diet or a long list of supplements. Focus on everyday habits that support overall metabolic health:

  • Manage chronic stress: Long-term stress can affect eating behavior, sleep, physical activity, and metabolic health.. Regular movement, time outdoors, social connection, relaxation practices, hobbies, and other enjoyable activities may help reduce your overall stress burden.
  • Eat more fiber-rich foods: Include vegetables, fruits, beans, lentils, whole grains, nuts, and seeds to support digestive and metabolic health.
  • Choose healthy sources of fat: Include fatty fish, walnuts, chia seeds, flaxseeds, avocado, and extra-virgin olive oil. Use these in place of less nutritious sources of saturated fat.
  • Stay physically active: Regular activity supports insulin sensitivity, cardiovascular health, muscle mass, and metabolic health.
  • Prioritize sleep: Aim for at least 7 hours of sleep per night, as poor sleep can affect appetite, metabolism, and weight regulation.

Does Losing Weight Reduce Inflammation?

Losing excess body fat may help calm chronic low-grade inflammation, particularly in people with overweight or obesity.

In a 2-year study of 710 adults with overweight or obesity, losing about 6.7% of body weight reduced hs-CRP, a marker of inflammation, by 24.7% after six months. The reduction was similar across different diet compositions.

A meta-analysis of randomized trials also found that people with obesity who achieved and maintained more than 5% weight loss had significantly lower IL-6, another inflammatory marker. However, weight loss did not significantly reduce TNF-α.

These findings suggest that meaningful weight loss can reduce some markers of chronic inflammation, although the effect may depend on the inflammatory marker being measured.

When Should You See a Doctor About Unexplained Weight Gain?

Don’t automatically assume that unexplained weight gain is caused by inflammation.

If your weight is increasing without an obvious explanation, especially if the change is persistent or accompanied by other symptoms, talk with a healthcare professional.

Seek medical advice if weight gain occurs alongside:

  • Significant swelling
  • Shortness of breath
  • Persistent fatigue
  • Changes in bowel habits
  • Changes in your menstrual cycle
  • Excessive thirst or urination
  • Unexplained fever
  • Significant abdominal swelling

Certain medical conditions and medications can cause weight gain, so identifying the underlying cause is more useful than simply trying to “lower inflammation.”
