11 Possible Signs of Chronic Inflammation in the Body

Inflammation is a normal part of your body’s immune response. It helps fight infections, repair damaged tissue, and protect you when something is wrong.

The problem is when inflammatory activity persists for months or years.

Chronic inflammation can be associated with several health conditions, but its symptoms are often vague and can easily be mistaken for stress, poor sleep, or other everyday problems.

What Is Chronic Inflammation?

When this response is short-lived, it’s called acute inflammation. Chronic inflammation occurs when inflammatory activity persists for a prolonged period instead of resolving.

Chronic inflammation can be associated with conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and autoimmune disorders. However, symptoms alone cannot confirm chronic inflammation, since many of the same symptoms can have other causes.

A meta-analysis of 38 studies found higher levels of several inflammatory markers in people with migraine than in healthy controls. The findings suggest that inflammation may play a role in migraine, but more research is needed to determine whether it contributes directly to migraine.

However, a headache by itself does not mean you have chronic inflammation. Stress, dehydration, lack of sleep, migraine, caffeine changes, and many other factors can cause headaches.
