How to Increase Estrogen Levels Naturally

Estrogen affects far more than your menstrual cycle. It plays an important role in bone health, reproductive function, vaginal health, and many other processes in the body.

So when estrogen drops, you may notice changes that seem unrelated at first—irregular periods, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, lower sex drive, or trouble sleeping.

But there is a lot of confusion about how to increase estrogen levels. You may have heard that certain foods, herbs, or supplements can “balance your hormones.” Some may support overall health, but they don’t necessarily raise estrogen in a meaningful way.

The right approach depends on why your estrogen is low in the first place. Here’s what can actually help, what probably won’t, and when low estrogen needs medical treatment.

What Causes Low Estrogen?

Estrogen naturally changes throughout life. Levels fluctuate during the menstrual cycle and gradually decline during perimenopause and menopause.

However, low estrogen can happen for other reasons too. Some common causes include:

  • Menopause or early menopause
  • Primary ovarian insufficiency
  • Very low body weight or inadequate calorie intake
  • Excessive exercise
  • Prolonged physical or emotional stress
  • Certain medical treatments, including chemotherapy or radiation
  • Surgical removal of the ovaries
  • Problems affecting the hypothalamus or pituitary gland

When low estrogen is caused by inadequate energy intake, excessive exercise, or another underlying problem, simply eating a few “estrogen-rich” foods may not solve it. The underlying cause needs to be addressed.

Strategies That May Help Increase Estrogen Levels

There is no reliable diet that can substantially raise estrogen when someone has clinically low estrogen. However, adequate nutrition and certain lifestyle factors can support normal reproductive hormone function, particularly when low energy availability or excessive exercise is contributing to hormonal disruption.

1. Eat Enough Calories

Your body needs adequate energy to maintain normal reproductive function.

Consistently eating too little, losing significant weight, or exercising without replacing enough energy can interfere with the hormones involved in ovulation and menstruation. This is particularly relevant when low estrogen is related to low energy availability.

A 2025 update on the Female Athlete Triad found that low energy availability can affect ovarian hormones, menstrual function, and bone health. The research also describes how these effects can develop and improve when energy availability is restored.

Rather than focusing only on “estrogen-boosting” foods, focus on getting enough overall energy and a balanced mix of protein, carbohydrates, healthy fats, fruits and vegetables, calcium, and vitamin D. No single food reliably treats clinically low estrogen.

2. Don’t Overexercise

Exercise is beneficial for overall health, but more isn’t always better. When intense exercise is combined with inadequate food intake, it can disrupt the menstrual cycle and reproductive hormones.

If your periods have become irregular or disappeared while following an intense training routine, your body may not be getting enough energy to support normal reproductive function.

An Endocrine Society guideline notes that stress, weight loss, and excessive exercise can contribute to functional hypothalamic amenorrhea, a condition in which normal reproductive function is disrupted. Addressing the energy imbalance through adequate food intake and, when necessary, reducing excessive exercise may help restore hormone function.

3. Maintain a Healthy Body Weight

Being significantly underweight or losing weight because of inadequate energy intake can be associated with lower estrogen and disrupted menstrual function.

A second 2025 update on the Female Athlete Triad found that menstrual problems caused by low energy can improve with increased food intake and modest weight gain. However, periods may return before ovulation and ovarian hormone levels have fully recovered.

This doesn’t mean that gaining weight is a treatment for every type of low estrogen. If estrogen is low because of menopause, primary ovarian insufficiency, surgery, or another medical condition, treatment depends on the underlying cause.

4. Manage Long-Term Stress

Chronic physical or psychological stress can interfere with the hormonal signals involved in ovulation and menstruation.

Stress alone isn’t necessarily the explanation for every case of low estrogen, but it can contribute to hormonal and menstrual disruption, particularly when combined with inadequate food intake or excessive exercise.

If stress is contributing to hormonal disruption, addressing the underlying factors may help. Adequate nutrition, appropriate exercise, sufficient rest, and psychological support can be part of a healthy recovery approach.

5. Get Enough Sleep

Sleep doesn’t work like an estrogen supplement, but consistently poor sleep can affect reproductive and hormonal health.

Research has linked short sleep and poor sleep quality with menstrual irregularities.

Interestingly, a 2019 study found that longer sleep was associated with higher levels of estradiol, a form of estrogen, and progesterone. However, these sleep-related hormone changes did not appear to greatly affect ovarian function in healthy women.

Aim for a regular sleep schedule and enough sleep for your individual needs.

6. Can Phytoestrogen-Rich Foods Increase Estrogen?

This is where things get a little confusing.

Foods such as soy and flaxseeds contain phytoestrogens—plant compounds that can interact with estrogen receptors in the body. Soy is rich in isoflavones, while flaxseeds contain lignans. This is why they’re often promoted as natural estrogen boosters.

But do they actually increase estrogen levels? The answer isn’t that simple.

Studies on soy have produced mixed results. An older meta-analysis of 47 studies found a small, but not statistically significant, increase in estradiol among postmenopausal women.

More recently, however, a 2025 meta-analysis of 40 trials involving 3,285 postmenopausal women found that soy isoflavones did not significantly increase estradiol or other measures of estrogenic activity.

Flaxseed has also produced mixed findings. Some research suggests it can influence how estrogen is metabolized without necessarily increasing blood estrogen levels.

One study found changes in estrogen metabolites, while another found lower blood levels of estradiol and estrone sulfate, two forms of estrogen, after flaxseed consumption. Neither study found significant changes in the other measured sex hormones.

Interestingly, a study has also reported improvements in menopausal symptoms with flaxseed, although this does not necessarily mean that flaxseed increases estrogen levels.

So, soy and flaxseed may influence estrogen-related pathways or help lower menopausal symptoms, but that doesn’t mean they reliably raise estrogen levels.

You can include soy, flaxseeds, and other estrogen-rich foods as part of a balanced diet, but they shouldn’t be considered a substitute for medical treatment when estrogen is clinically low.

7. Can Probiotics Increase Estrogen?

Your gut bacteria may play a role in how your body recycles estrogen. This process, sometimes called the estrobolome, helps return estrogen to the bloodstream.

Interestingly, a 12-week study found that a probiotic containing L. brevis KABP052 helped maintain estrogen levels in peri- and postmenopausal women. Estradiol and estrone levels were higher after 12 weeks than in the placebo group, although more research is needed.

Another study of 2,699 women found that probiotic intake was associated with higher estradiol levels in premenopausal women and lower testosterone levels in postmenopausal women. However, because it was observational, it cannot prove that probiotics caused these hormone changes.

Overall, more research is needed before probiotics can be considered a reliable way to increase estrogen levels.

What About Estrogen-Boosting Supplements?

Be careful with supplements marketed as “natural estrogen boosters” or “hormone balancers.”

Natural does not automatically mean effective or safe. Some supplements may have estrogen-like activity, interact with medications, or affect other hormones, while evidence that they can meaningfully correct low estrogen is limited.

If you have symptoms that suggest low estrogen, it’s better to determine the cause rather than trying hormone supplements on your own.

How Do You Know If Your Estrogen Is Low?

Symptoms can provide clues, but they cannot confirm low estrogen on their own. Estrogen can be measured with blood testing, although levels naturally fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle, so a single result may not tell the whole story.

Your healthcare provider may consider your symptoms, menstrual history, age, medications, and other hormone tests to determine whether estrogen is actually low and why.

When Should You See a Doctor?

Consider getting evaluated if you have:

  • Periods that suddenly become irregular or stop
  • No period for three months or longer
  • Menopause-like symptoms at a young age
  • Persistent vaginal dryness or painful sex
  • Significant weight loss with menstrual changes
  • Very intense exercise with irregular or absent periods
  • A history of ovarian surgery, chemotherapy, or pelvic radiation

Finding the cause is more useful than simply assuming you need to raise estrogen.

If you’re wondering how to increase estrogen levels, start by asking a more important question: why are your estrogen levels low?

Healthy nutrition, appropriate exercise, adequate sleep, and managing stress can support hormone function when lifestyle factors are involved. But if low estrogen has an underlying medical cause, finding and treating that cause is more important than chasing “estrogen-boosting” foods or supplements.
